Large river ecosystems may struggle to support long food chains.
The researchers studied the food web in a floodplain lake of the Paraná River to find out the average trophic level, food chain length, and omnivory. They used a food web model and stable isotopes to analyze the relationships between different organisms. The study showed that the food chain length in the river is not very long, despite its high productivity. The researchers suggest that the river's fluctuating water levels may prevent longer food chains from forming.
