Smart Grid Appliances Poised to Transform Electricity Sector, Boost Renewable Integration
To make Dutch electricity cleaner and more reliable, smart grid appliances like smart washing machines or fridges can help households save money by adjusting electricity usage based on prices. An agent-based model simulated how households decide to buy these smart appliances, considering interactions among them. The analysis followed the Diffusion of Innovations Theory and identified five groups of adopters: innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority, and laggards. Policymakers might need to encourage more households to adopt smart grid appliances for better integration of renewable energies in the electricity sector, balancing reliability and affordability.
