The article discusses how safety techniques can be applied to transportation to reduce accidents and fatalities. Two techniques, failure mode effects and criticality analysis, and fault-free analysis, are modified for transportation safety studies. By using these techniques at each level of a transportation system, safety specialists can ensure safety at every stage of a project. The concept of system safety is well-suited for transportation safety, and it should be adopted and applied at the modal facility level.
