Widening of Huey P. Long Bridge to Ease Traffic Congestion
The Huey P. Long Bridge, a major highway and railroad bridge near New Orleans, is being widened to accommodate the region's growing traffic needs. The project involves expanding the existing roadways to three lanes with refuge shoulders on each side. Challenges include maintaining traffic flow during construction, assessing the piers' ability to handle increased loads, determining the remaining lifespan of the steel truss superstructure, and dealing with the alignment of new trusses with existing ones. Solutions have been developed to address these issues and ensure the successful completion of the project.
