Shade-tolerant rice variety boosts yield in low-light conditions, aiding food security.
Shading stress can affect rice growth and yield. Researchers studied how shading during the grain filling period impacts photosynthesis and grain production in different rice varieties. They found that shading increased chlorophyll content in some varieties, leading to better light absorption. One variety, IIyou 498, showed improved light-harvesting ability and maintained stable photosynthetic rates under shading, resulting in less damage to spikelet filling and a smaller reduction in grain yield. This suggests that breeding for improved light-harvesting and use efficiency could help develop shade-tolerant rice varieties.
