New highway safety approach ensures protection for all road users.
The UK Highways Agency has developed a hazard-based approach to manage safety risks on highways. This approach aims to ensure that road projects are implemented with the right level of safety for all users. By setting safety objectives and understanding how the network will operate, successful outcomes can be achieved. The methodology presented in the paper shows how this approach has been applied to improve safety on Managed Motorway schemes. Monitoring and reviewing strategies have helped create an evidence base for future interventions on the network.
