Planned developments threaten rare species in Pikes Peak region.
The Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments used a planning framework to combine land use, conservation, transportation, and community planning in the region. They updated their modeling system and added new tools to assess the impact of transportation projects on habitats and rare species. The analysis showed that some species are at risk due to planned developments. By increasing density around transportation corridors, growth can be focused in city centers while still meeting conservation goals. However, the best plan was not chosen by local leaders because it required changes in land use.
