The STEP UP project aims to improve transportation, land use, and environmental planning in urban areas. A new model planning process was developed to include environmental data early on in transportation planning. An application was created to help users follow the modified process and build a database of projects and environmental data. The use of a geographic information system (GIS) is essential for displaying environmental data on maps within the application. The project recommends short-term testing and long-term implementation of the STEP UP process at a statewide level. The outcomes can benefit local, regional, state, and federal agencies in their planning activities.
