Precast Concrete Revolutionizes Bridge Construction for Short-to-Medium Spans
The majority of bridges in the U.S. are made of concrete, with over 20% using prestressed/precast concrete. This material is commonly used for bridges under 100 feet long due to its strength, durability, and cost-effectiveness. High-performance steel is also popular for its strength and corrosion resistance. Timber and fiber-reinforced polymer composites are used in bridge construction but are not as widely accepted. Other materials like FRP-concrete and high-performance concrete are also discussed in the article.
