Lack of Transportation Research Threatens Future Mobility and Prosperity
Transportation research is declining due to funding cuts, lack of management involvement, and decentralized responsibilities. Without research, the industry may struggle to adapt to changing markets and new technology. To ensure effective research investments, management should assess future markets, competition spending, current tools, and research progress. A strategic overview is needed to ensure research funds are well-spent. The Transportation Research Board is working on identifying strategic research needs for highways, mass transit, and other modes.
