Innovative Concrete Surfaces Revolutionize Efficiency at Port of Tacoma.
The Port of Tacoma has two intermodal rail yards, one made of Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) and the other with both RCC and cast-in-place surfaces. The yards were constructed differently and have different operating methods. The South yard cost 4 million and covers 23 acres. The South yard uses top picks, and the North yard uses straddle carriers. Both yards have performed well, but the paper compares their construction, performance, and maintenance methods.
