Polluted Stormwater Meets Its Match: Construction Waste Cleans Up Heavy Metals
Construction waste was tested to see if it could filter out heavy metals from dirty rainwater. The waste did a great job, removing over 90% of the metals in different particle sizes. Scientists found that the waste could pull heavy metals from the water pretty quickly and hold onto them well. They used batch experiments to see how fast the waste could clean the water and what the best conditions were. The results showed that the size of the waste bits affects how fast and how much metal they can soak up. Overall, the study proved that construction waste can be excellent at cleaning dirty rainwater of heavy metals.
