New asphalt process reduces energy use and improves mix quality.
A new process called the KGO process was invented to make asphalt mixes more efficiently. It uses less energy and bitumen while improving mix quality. The process involves adding larger aggregate particles and bitumen first, then adding the rest of the aggregates gradually. Bitumen is injected in solid streams, not sprayed. Mixing temperature can be lower than usual. The mix is quickly ready for use once all ingredients are in the mixer. The process requires changes to the mixing plant setup. Trials in Germany and Sweden showed positive results.
