Government Subsidies Crucial for Sustainable Public Transport
Financial support for regional public transport is provided for four main reasons: to help companies become profitable again, to compensate for decreased demand, to ensure services continue, and to potentially nationalize transport companies. The government determines the amount of support needed based on factors like average usage. Efficiency and quality of service are also important factors in determining support. The first and fourth reasons for support are not as important as the second and third reasons. The Netherlands currently applies these concepts to their public transport system.
