Hybrid rice breeding in Jiangsu, China has progressed in three stages since 1970. The first stage focused on developing cytoplasmic male sterile lines. The second stage saw the rapid popularity of indica hybrid rice, followed by japonica hybrid rice. In the third stage, breakthroughs were made in breeding both indica and japonica hybrid rice, leading to successful hybrids like Teyou 559 and Liangyoupeijiu.
