World population to reach 10.4 billion by 2155, major growth in less developed regions.
The report projects the population growth of countries worldwide from 1980 to the point where populations stabilize. By analyzing birth rates, death rates, and other factors, the researchers predict that the global population will increase from 4.421 billion in 1980 to 6.160 billion in 2000. The average growth rate will decrease over this period, with less developed regions experiencing faster growth. India and China are expected to surpass a billion people, with Nigeria close behind. Once populations stabilize, 23 countries will have over 100 million people, mostly in Asia and Africa. The estimated stationary global population is 10.4 billion, but these predictions are speculative.
