The Sacramento Area Council of Governments in California is using intelligent transport systems to improve transportation planning. They created a Strategic Deployment Plan with input from various experts and reviewed multiple land use plans. The plan follows smart-growth principles and includes strategies for integrating ITS solutions into all projects in the region. By involving non-ITS stakeholders, they were able to outline the benefits of this approach. An ITS Vision Statement was developed to align the plan with transportation goals. Additionally, an ITS Solutions Toolbox was created to guide planners and managers.
