Coal Gasification Poised to Transform Energy Landscape, Boost Efficiency and Reduce Emissions
Coal gasification technology for generating electricity has been extensively studied globally. The research focused on clarifying the current status and economic feasibility of different coal gasification systems. The Advanced Power Systems Division of EPRI conducted significant work in this area. The guide aims to present up-to-date and consistent information on the development, application, and costs of various coal gasification methods, including Lurgi, Koppers-Totzek, Texaco, Shell, and others. It discusses environmental impacts, performance, reliability, and costs for generating medium-Btu gas, integrating gasification into power plants, and producing methanol from coal. Comparative estimates are provided for coal-fired and oil-fired steam plants, as well as oil- and gas-fired combined-cycle plants. Overall, the guide provides insights into the status, applications, and economics of coal gasification systems worldwide.
