Innovative Bridge Program Extends Lifespan of Concrete Bridges.
The IBRC program was created to develop and promote new materials for bridges. It has funded 157 projects by 2001, with a total of $102 million authorized until 2003. The program has supported the construction of around 250 bridges using innovative materials. High performance concrete (HPC) has been used in 29 projects, including bridge decks, substructures, and railings. HPC is chosen for its durability and longer service life, especially in areas with ice and snow. The expectation is that HPC will create bridges with significantly longer lifespans.
