Whittier Bridge Project: Innovative Design Creates Shared-Use Path for Community.
The Whittier Bridge Replacement Project in Massachusetts faced challenges, but a creative solution was found. The existing traffic was moved to a new bridge, the old one was demolished, and a new bridge was built. The surplus deck was repurposed as a shared-use path. This project was successful in staying on budget and schedule, and was chosen for a fast-track process by the Obama administration. The design used weathering steel and a special coating system. The project showed that smart planning and design can meet goals efficiently.
