Folic acid fortified foods crucial in preventing nutrient deficiencies in preschoolers.
Preschoolers in Ontario are getting some zinc and folic acid from fortified foods, but not enough to meet their needs. Zinc-fortified foods only slightly increase zinc intake, while folic acid-fortified foods play a big role in meeting folate needs. Without these fortified foods, many preschoolers would not get enough folate. The current food fortification policy in Canada seems to be helping these kids get the nutrients they need.
