Hanford Site faces challenges in safe storage of radioactive tank wastes.
The Hanford Site in Washington was originally used to make plutonium for defense, but now focuses on managing and disposing of radioactive waste. The Tank Waste Remediation System Program deals with storing and disposing of tank waste, including cesium and strontium capsules. Different chemical processing facilities at the site have changed the composition of the waste over time. The challenge is to safely store and dispose of these wastes.
