Rice-pigeonpea combo boosts soil health and crop yields in Vertisols.
A study was done to see how different ways of growing rice and other crops affect the soil and productivity in Vertisols. The method of growing rice didn't change the soil's nutrients much. Planting pigeonpea or redgram in the winter increased soil quality and led to higher rice yields the next year. Rice-safflower sequence gave the best overall results in terms of yield. Rice-pigeonpea sequence had more organic matter and nutrients, but less potassium and zinc.
