Shortwall mining method limits subsidence, protects environment and infrastructure.
A study was done on shortwall mining at a mine to understand the rock structure, stresses, and ground movements. They found that the roof and floor rocks were strong, the main shale roof caved up to a sandstone bed, and the chain pillars crushed during mining, creating a flat-bottomed subsidence trough. The failed chain pillars acted as support, limiting subsidence to less than 45% of the coal thickness.
