Dwindling water resources in Cameroon threaten livelihoods, demand urgent action on climate change.
Climate change is affecting water resources in Cameroon, leading to more intense storms and increased risks of flooding and droughts. The study analyzed historical data and projected future impacts on water availability. Surface water resources in the northern part of Cameroon decreased by 30% from 1968 to 2006, while in the southern parts, the reduction was about 14%. Despite these reductions, there will still be enough water resources in all river basins by 2050, but with increased variability. To ensure water security, more water storage dams will be needed.
