Secondary forests in Japan set to become primary forests, preserving biodiversity.
The study compared primary and secondary forests in Tatera Forest Reserve, Japan. The primary forest has canopy gaps, while the secondary forest does not. Both forests have Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii as the dominant tree species. Distylium racemosum is the second dominant species in the primary forest and has many regenerating saplings in both forests. This suggests that the secondary forest will eventually become like the primary forest if left undisturbed.
