Gasification of low-grade fuels could power cities and produce valuable chemicals.
In recent years, efforts to turn lower-quality fuels into useful energy have struggled, but gasification stands out as a successful method. Researchers have made progress in turning these fuels into electric power and valuable chemicals. Projects in the US, Europe, and Japan are working on improving gasification technologies. Some successful projects are already operational and economically viable. The main focus areas include generating electricity through integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) and making high-value chemicals. The Department of Energy in the US is actively testing new coal gasification methods, while Europe and Japan are exploring IGCC power plants. Some projects are now in the demonstration or commercial stage, showing that gasification of coal, low-grade fuels, and biomass is a promising area to produce energy and valuable products.
