Nitrogen application at the early stage of jointing and flag leaf expansion in wheat under limited irrigation increases chlorophyll and protein contents, photosynthetic rate, and leaf source capacity. It also enhances cellular protection enzymes, delays leaf senescence, and improves kernel dry matter accumulation and yield. Split nitrogen application is more effective than single application in improving photosynthetic functions and yield, especially in wheat cultivars with low drought tolerance.
