New mulberry hybrids show potential for doubling leaf yield production.
Researchers studied hybrid mulberry plants to see if they could produce more leaves than their parents. They crossed two types of mulberry plants and found that some of the hybrid plants had significantly higher leaf yields compared to the original plants. Some hybrids showed a 56.84% to 364.56% increase in leaf yield compared to the average of their parents. This suggests that breeding hybrid mulberry plants could lead to new varieties with higher leaf yields. One hybrid, No. 73, and 14 others, showed promising results with over 100% increase in leaf yield compared to a standard variety.
