Hybrid buses to double fuel economy, slash emissions by 90%
A new type of vehicle called a Hybrid Turbine Electric Vehicle is being developed to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. The vehicle will use a natural-gas-fueled engine that turns a generator to produce electricity. This electricity powers an electric motor attached to the rear wheels. The goal is to create a heavy urban transit bus that uses half as much fuel as current buses and emits only 1/10th of the pollution. The researchers are working with partners like universities and government agencies to make this vehicle a reality.
