Rice and legume intercropping boosts yields and soil health in Bihar plateau.
An experiment was conducted to see if growing rice with legumes in Bihar plateau could increase yields. They planted rice with soybean, blackgram, greengram, and pigeonpea in different combinations. Rice + pigeonpea gave the highest yield, followed by rice + soybean. Pigeonpea and soybean were better suited for the soil than rice. The soil was enriched with nitrogen from the legumes, which helped increase the yield of the next crop, Indian mustard.
