Revolutionizing Railways: Quieter Freight Trains to Save Money and Environment
Railways are working to reduce noise from freight trains by using smoother rail surfaces and new brake blocks. New wagons will have quieter K-blocks, while existing wagons will be retrofitted with LL-blocks. Studies show that improving rolling stock is cheaper than changing infrastructure. By combining noise control measures, significant cost savings can be achieved. Money saved from infrastructure changes can be used for noise reduction in rolling stock. A tool is being developed to help determine the best mix of noise control measures.
