Highway Stormwater Runoff Has Minimal Impact on Water Quality in Creek.
Highways can affect water quality, but a study on Little Cahaba Creek found that Interstate-59 runoff has minimal impact on nutrient levels and other water quality indicators. Monitoring showed only small differences in nitrate, total nitrogen, total phosphorous, and total suspended solids levels upstream and downstream of the highway. During rain events, turbidity levels increased the most, while conductivity spiked immediately after rainfall. However, pH and temperature remained stable. Overall, the study suggests that I-59 runoff does not significantly impact water quality in the Little Cahaba Creek.
