Polluted Keum River Threatens Agricultural Water Quality and Livelihoods.
The water quality of the Keum River was studied at 4 sites over two years. In 1997, the water was found to be suitable for irrigation. The pH of the river ranged from 6.7 to 8.0, with different electrical conductivity levels at different locations. Inorganic contents were highest in April, decreased in following months, and slightly increased in September. June had the highest contents overall. Taepyeong-ri had the highest inorganic contents due to sewage and livestock waste. These contents were lower when there was more precipitation.
