New Yeasts Boost Ethanol Production, Paving the Way for Cleaner Fuels!
Researchers isolated four yeast strains that can produce ethanol efficiently, even in the presence of high levels of ethanol. Among these strains, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Saccharomycodes ludwigii showed the highest ethanol tolerance and production. The non-Saccharomyces yeast Sd. ludwigii ATKU47 produced ethanol levels similar to S. cerevisiae ATKU132. The maximum ethanol concentrations produced by these strains from sugar sources were around 8-9% under specific conditions.
