Toxic flame retardants in sewage sludge vanish under new microbial treatment.
Researchers studied how certain chemicals in sewage sludge can be broken down by natural bacteria in the absence of oxygen. They found that after 15 months, the levels of these chemicals decreased significantly, with some being completely degraded. The higher brominated chemicals were removed faster than the lower ones, and a major mechanism of breakdown was debromination. Overall, about half of the targeted chemicals were removed from the sludge samples.
