Mars has long fascinated scientists with its potential for extraterrestrial life. The Viking Missions searched for life on Mars but found none. However, they did discover that Mars once had conditions suitable for life to exist. Evidence of water in Mars' past suggests it may have supported life at some point. Techniques used to study early life on Earth could also be applied to Mars.
