The researchers studied the distribution of small animals living in the mud near a shellfish farm in Chinhae Bay, Korea. They found 107 different species, with some types dominating the area. The animals were affected by the amount of organic matter in the sediment, leading to different communities in different regions. The animals suffered in the summer due to low oxygen levels, but recovered in the winter. This cycle of summer stress and winter recovery may be common in areas with high pollution.
