Maize with multiple ears and tillers leads to higher crop yields.
The researchers studied how maize plants grow extra stems called tillers. They looked at when and where tillers grow, how many there are, their angle, height, and root systems. They used different types of maize plants, mostly from Korea. They found that tillers usually start growing about 18 to 20 days after the main plant sprouts, with more tillers appearing a few days later. Each tiller has its own roots and grows from the lower part of the main stem. The number of tillers per plant varies, with some plants having up to ten. The angle and height of tillers also vary, depending on the type of maize. The best tillers were seen in Korean maize plants.
