Transportation research projects aim to improve safety, cost savings, and efficiency in transportation systems. State Departments of Transportation sponsor these projects, but often struggle to measure their true impact. A synthesis of best practices has been created to help determine the value of research results. This synthesis reviews methods used by State DOTs to quantify the value of transportation research. It identifies measures and data sources used to demonstrate the impact of research on safety, quality, and cost effectiveness in transportation systems.
