Conoco's Monobuoy System Proves Resilient in Harsh UK Sea Conditions.
Conoco Ltd. has successfully operated a monobuoy terminal in the UK's Humber estuary for over 18 months. They use a 36-inch pipeline to transfer crude oil to a tank farm at Tetney, preventing solidification of the oil in winter by flushing the line with sea water. The terminal handles an average of one tanker per week, with up to three in a busy week. Two tugs equipped with oil spill response measures assist in mooring tankers and servicing the buoy. Despite one minor spill, the system has proven effective in safely unloading oil.
