Spruce trees reveal secrets of water uptake dynamics in changing climates.
The study looked at how spruce trees take up water from the soil over a long period of time. They used a mix of measurements and computer models to understand how the soil and trees interact with the atmosphere. By monitoring soil water levels and tree sap flow, they found that spruce trees use a lot of water, especially during the day. They also discovered that trees can move water around in the soil to help each other out. Night-time water use by trees was also investigated. The research was done in a forested area in the Czech Republic, where they used special instruments to track the water movements in the soil and trees.
