Forests Could Slash Greenhouse Gases and Boost Economy Under Right Policies
This study looked at how planting trees could help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Australia. They wanted to see how different ways of accounting for the carbon captured by forests could affect the economic benefits. By creating a model of the New South Wales forest industry, they found that switching farmland to forests and managing them well could lower carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. They also found that considering factors like fire risk and the value of agricultural land is crucial for understanding how much carbon can be stored in forests. The study shows that investing in forest-based carbon sequestration could be a good way to fight climate change.
