The study validated a tool called RuminActTM that measures rumination time in dairy cows using acoustics. They found that the equipment slightly underestimated rumination time but was still useful for research and health monitoring. The cows in the study had enough time to meet their behavioral needs, and there were differences in rumination time between different feed rations. Longer rumination was linked to higher milk yield and longer inter-cycle periods.
