A new type of bridge deck called NUDECK is being developed to be stronger and cheaper than traditional concrete decks. The panels are pre-made and installed faster, without the need for as much manual labor. The SKYLINE Bridge in Omaha showed that this system works well. The second generation of NUDECK panels will be even better, with improvements like a smoother surface and added reinforcement to prevent cracks. These panels will be made in standard sizes to fit different bridge shapes, and they won't need grout for joints.
