Concrete bridge engineers have developed a method to predict the effects of compressive forces in bridge deck slabs, known as compressive membrane action. This method, based on theoretical studies and experimental testing, is used in the Ontario highway bridge design code to design bridge slabs economically. Slabs designed using this method have shown good performance in practice.
