Mars was explored for signs of life by the Viking project in 1975 using three biology experiments. These experiments did not find evidence of current life on Mars, but did not rule out the possibility of past life. Future missions will focus on finding traces of extinct life, such as metabolic signatures, fossils, and preserved organic materials.
