Direct payments in rural Japan revive farmland and boost community activities.
The study looked at how direct payments in rural Japan help farmers and communities. They found that direct payments aim to support multiple functions, reorient agriculture, and boost community activities. Farmers agree to prevent farmland abandonment and follow good practices. In less-favored areas, 662,000 hectares of land received direct payments. As a result, farmland abandonment decreased, and farming and community activities improved.
