New waste management techniques ensure safe handling of radioactive materials.
The Savannah River Plant Waste Management Program focuses on safely handling and disposing of waste from making nuclear materials for the US Department of Energy. They store high-level radioactive liquid waste in double-containment tanks and reduce its volume through evaporation. A new facility is being built to treat low-level liquid hazardous and radioactive waste. They use engineered trenches for solid low-level waste and updated procedures for transuranic waste storage. A new disposal method, Greater Confinement Disposal, is being tested for intermediate-level waste. Nonradioactive hazardous waste is stored on site.
