Dam construction and water consumption drastically alter Yangtze River sediment flow.
The Changjiang (Yangtze River) has seen a decrease in water and sediment discharge over the past 150 years due to human activities like dam construction and soil conservation. Water flow has decreased by 10% annually, with the most significant drop between August and November. Sediment load has decreased by over 70% since the 1970s, leading to erosion on the delta and a decrease in wetlands. Despite this, sediment resuspension from erosion has partially offset the decline in sediment supply. The trend of decreasing water and sediment discharge is expected to continue due to human impacts for the rest of the century.
